5th winner from 5th country at 5th Slovenia Open!2010-11-08 04:31:07
Few days before the tournament it seemed that nothing could stop K. Curkovic (52. on ITHF Ranking)
from getting his second title in a row, then suddenly V. Pikl (64.) and B. Axelsen (38.) registered for the tournament.

So we had 36 players from 4 countries on Saturday, competing first in 2
basic groups with 18 players.

In Group 1 we got B. Rjavec, V. Kufrin and B. Skrlep on the top, following by 2 favourites U. Matanovic and B. Axelsen. In Group 2 there were no surprises: first V. Pikl and then N. Škrlep and K. Ćurković. All highest ranked players got into the final group where V. Pikl continued with great performance and B. Axelsen finally reached the expected position.
In play off we saw first surprise in the Bernards' battle with a victory of B. Skrlep. Then V. Pikl was stopped in 1/4 finals by U. Matanovic.
K. Curkovic and B. Axelsen promoted to the semi final without major problems and we all expected a dramatic battle in the finals after their victory against U. Matanovic and V. Kufrin.

However the only dramatic thing on Saturday was a dancing group that claimed we had to move out from the big hall due to their rehearsal. It was an obvious mistake of the school chairman, but ... shit happens ..
We finished in a small classroom, but nothing could spoil the day anymore.

B. Axelsen as a gentleman followed the tradition so we got the fifth winner from the fifth country at fifth Slovenia Open. :)

Unfortunately no medal for Slovenia. Again! Croatia took two of them as V. Kufrin turned down the audience by beating U. Matanovic in a bronze medal match by 5:0 in the fifth game (total 3:2).

I wonder who will take care of the tradition next year? :D
